[Letter], 1848 January 14, London, Eng., [to] the Senate and Assembly of the State of New York, Albany, N.Y.

Whitlaw petitions New York State for a reward in recognition of his services during epidemics that had broken out in the 1790s. He claims that he discovered cures for the diseases that were afflicting the populace and, furthermore, that ex-governor DeWitt Clinton had assured him that such a reward would be forthcoming. He also claimed to have helped bring an end to the War of 1812. From this letter, there is no apparent connection between Whitlaw and the Shakers.
